About Me

Jim O’Brien

Private Maths & English Tutor in Exeter

I have worked as a private tutor in Exeter for over 15 years, helping primary age pupils develop their skills in English and Maths, coaching children for the 11+ grammar school entrance exams and working with students preparing to take their English GCSEs.

Of the pupils I have worked with for the 11+, over 86% have passed the tests and gone on to take up places at Colyton or Torquay Grammar Schools.

Prior to working as a Maths and English tutor, I spent nearly ten years as a class teacher in primary schools, during which time I taught all year groups from Reception to Year 6.

Earlier in my career, and whilst studying for my doctorate, I taught courses in history, the history of art and English literature at University College London and at the University of Sussex.

Alongside my private tuition work, I have also worked for over ten years as a freelance educational writer and consultant, mainly for the education charity Hamilton Trust (now part of Oxford Brookes University and operating as Hamilton Brookes), creating schemes of work and resources for primary school teachers to use in their classrooms.
